Parent Resource: Dads and Their Daughters

Zenit recently interviewed Meg Meeker, the author of "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters: 10 Secrets Every Father Should Know." In the interview, Meeker talks about how dads have more of an effect on their daughter's lives than they may ever know. Many self-esteem issues along with depression, and sexual activity of girls have been linked to fathers who have not played a supportive role in their daughter's lives. The way a father treats his daughter is a strong indicator of how the girl will relate to men the rest of her life.

Internet Dangers

One of the attractions of the Internet is personal safety derived from relative anonymity. Unfortunately, this same anonymity can be similarly dangerous in the hands of a predator. A teen doesn't always know with whom he or she is interacting. Teens may think they know, but unless it's a school friend, a relative or someone they've met in person, they really can't be sure. Often parents think of pedophiles as having access to children out on the playground and other public places, but without being smart about internet usage, teens can actually be interacting on their home computers with adults who pretend to be other teens. Here are five ways to protect your children from internet strangers.

Also, for a funny yet startling real skit on the dangers of anonymous users on the internet, check out this SNL skit .

Parents: Texas Governor's Cheap Shot at Teenage Girls

Parents of young teenage girls beware!

The Governor in Texas (Perry) wants to 'take a shot' at your sixth grade daughter and he is evoking his executive power to do it. This is not your typical “cheap shot” either; this one could allow the state to go against your parental, religious or medical wishes. If this becomes the norm in Texas it could become the norm throughout the United States.

In addition, some schools have their own smaller Parent Network associations.

The Parent Network of Catholic High Schools prints a Resource Booklet and offers these booklets to member schools (of PNCHS) at cost. Each participating area school then distributes this booklet free of charge to its parents. PNCHS also offers two or three presentations each year to parents in the St. Louis area. All parents are welcome.

Love and... responsibility?

“It is routinely pointed out that about half of all marriages end in divorce. But what is not often discussed is the other half of the equation: the marriages that don’t break up. Are those marriages thriving? Do married couples that stay together feel truly close to one another? Do they achieve true, lasting, personal intimacy?”

Read more of this great article from Next Wave Faithful about the awesome gift of love and our response-ability of self-giving.

The Role of Father as Family Protector

In an age of same-sex “marriages” and children having “two mommies,” the meaning of fatherhood has become blurred for many. James Stenson, educator and author of parenting books, including “Father, the Family Protector” (Scepter), clearly sees men’s irreplaceable and imperative role in their marriages and families. Read this article to learn about the different ways men are protectors, and how they uniquely contribute to the development of their sons and daughters.

“A 38-year-old father sits in his office and ponders how our culture has drifted so far from its moral moorings: ‘I have a 14-year-old daughter and the world she is growing up in scares me. I hear all this stuff about the number of kids having sex and the growing number of teens involved in oral sex and I can’t believe what’s going on. Things have changed so quickly and I can’t figure out why.’ Like many other parents, today’s youth culture leaves one confused and concerned about the new casual sex revolution. What in the world is going on?” Learn more here.

The mass media constantly bombards us with images of what beauty is. Young girls, especially teenaged girls, sometimes never feel like they are pretty enough. As if dealing with the media is sometimes difficult enough, mothers can put additional pressure on their daughters to match up to society’s standard of beauty. Read more about how you as a mother can help your daughter build confidence, have a positive Body Image, and help her to realize the beauty that she truly is.

"You Wanna Take This Online?"

Ahhhh.. The Internet. A fabulous way to get information at the click of a button, a wonderful tool for keeping in tough via e-mail, the best way to get a great bargain, and the easiest new way to pick on someone.

In today’s world many teens spend hours a week online, but what are they doing? As parents we need to be aware of the things that our children are looking at, the people that our children are talking to, and what our children are talking about.

Cyber bullying has become very popular, especially among young teenaged girls. Read more about this in TIME magazines article “You Wanna Take This Online”

“You Wanna Take This Online” is a small part of a huge report called “Being 13”a great article on todays young teens.

The Importance of a Father in the Home

Where have all the fathers gone? Whether the mother is single or the father works all the time, there are many families with nonexistent fathers. Our society has changed the expectations of men to the point where they sometimes inadequately fulfill their role in their children’s lives. These children are left broken and hurt, with no guidance for their spiritual, physical, and emotional growth. Yet, there is hope for those who are fatherless physically and spiritually. Amanda Lynn Geesey explains in The Importance of a Father in the Home.

BB's, Bullets, and Innocence Lost

“Paper bulls’-eyes and tin cans were no longer satisfying. Without really discussing it, Todd and I silently headed to the woods knowing that it was time to “graduate” to a new level of excitement by shooting at moving targets. Once in the woods and out of the sight of adult eyes, we passed his BB gun back and forth, alternating shots. Finally, Todd pumped up the gun, took careful aim into a tree, and pulled the trigger. A bloodied bird fell to the ground near our feet. We knelt over the bird and cried like babies as we watched it die. Guilty and shocked, we both ran home to confess our crime and seek solace in the arms of our mothers.”

Read more of BB’s, Bullets, and Innocence Lost by Walt Mueller to explore the virus of violence present in the media experiences of young people today, and learn how to begin answering this problem in concrete ways that will help them regain their innocence.

There's a Virus in the Air

It’s no wonder that many of the school shootings over the past several years were caused by young people saturated in a culture of violence. In There’s a Virus in the Air, Walt Mueller takes a look at this “virus” which goes uncured in most homes, and invites parents to take an active role in monitoring the sources of input which are infecting their children. There is still time to teach the words, “turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it” (Psalm 34:14).

Parents play the most important role in the development of their children. And, according to a recent study, much of this development gravitates around the closeness of the parents to the children’s lives. Take a look at this article, Time to Connect with Your Teens for more information on the study and and for a few practical tips for encouraging that closeness.
